Top 4 1950s Hairstyles for Women
By tmcspadden
The 1950's was a unique period in United States history. During the 1950's, many Americans were questioning the Government and the order of things, women were looking for more ways to express themselves. In the 1950s women were straying away from the safe and the norm, and looking for hairstyles that were fun. These hair-styles helped to define an era and are some of the most recognizable images from the 50's.
Waves and Bangs
Think Bettie Page. Thick hair with waves and an extremely heavy bang. In some cases the hair was curled, or 'set' overnight with curlers to create big curls which could be brushed into pronounced waves. The thick wavy hair with equally wavy hair was fun, stylish and pretty easy to achieve.
Blonde Pin-curls
Often associated with Marilyn
Monroe, the blonde pin-curl was popular long before she made it her
signature. Pin-curls were used to create small, almost wild curls that
set off bleach blonde hair. Women used a heavy amount of hairspray to
hold their curls in place after loosely combing the newly set curls with
their finger-tips.
Partial Up-do
This hair style combined the use of heavy bangs with a more conservative hairstyle. Some of the hair was secured using a clip or an elaborate knot, while some of the hair was left free. Women who wanted to express themselves, but who didn't want to bleach their hair or wear their hair lose could enjoy thick bangs while keeping most of their up.
Big Curls and Scarf
Thick curls secured by a scarf or band was a pin-up girl signature that many women wanted to emulate. The look involved setting the hair using big curlers and loosely combing it after securing it with a scarf. Some of the curls were allowed to fry freely while the majority of the hair was constrained.
