Best Zombie Comic Books
71Growing up my mother always told me comic books would rot my brains. For the most part my brain is still in one piece, but each time I pick up one of my favorite zombie comic books her words haunt me. In my previous hub, Best Zombie Books, I exposed my love of the zombie genre.
To be honest, I adored comic books long before I read my first zombie novel, but discovering zombie comic books brought me to a whole new level of geekdom. Zombie comic books are graphic, gory, and completely engrossing. There are many zombie comic books and I decided to create a list containing some of the best zombie filled comics on the market.
The Walking Dead
There is nothing in the zombie comic genre that compares to The Walking Dead. Written by Robert Kirkman and released by Image Comics, the Walking Dead has such a cult following that AMC produced a television show based on the extremely popular comic book.
The story follows Rick Grimes, a sheriff from a small town who wakes up from a coma in the hospital to find that dead have risen and his family is missing. Yes, that sounds like the premise of every zombie novel or movie in the free world, but Kirkman does not just write about surviving attacks by the zombie hordes. The Walking Dead explores what people will do to survive, and what surviving in a world filled with horrors does to a person.
I've read every issue of The Walking Dead and look forward to new issues every month. In fact, one of my happiest comic book memories was the month when not one, but two Walking Dead issues were published. Reading the comics and watching how the characters change will either inspire you or break your heart.
Marvel Zombies
To be perfectly honest this series was almost the first in my “best of” list. I am a huge Marvel fangirl and almost broke my neck getting to my local comic shop when Marvel Zombies was released. The premise of Marvel Zombies is simple insofar as zombie fiction ever is.
All of your favorite Marvel heroes are zombies and must consume human flesh. The former superheroes can't eat each other (they just don't taste right) so they must work together to find more food! The series crosses into alternative Marvel universes, brings in our favorite aliens, and shows us our favorite Marvel characters in zombie form.
Who are my favorite Marvel Zombies characters? Spiderman, Wolverine, Iron Man, Quicksilver and (briefly) the Phoenix. This series with every tie-in or crossover out story arch is a must have for any Marvel fan who happens to love flesh eating mayhem!
Raise the Dead
I discovered this comic when I was shooting the breeze with a local comic book guy. I casually mentioned how much I enjoyed Marvel Zombies and he rather slyly recommended Raise the Dead. He was probably trying to tempt me away from my regular comic book store, and regardless of his motives I thank him for his unsolicited recommendation.
Raise the Dead is an insanely fast paced four-part comic book series. I can barely describe it without spoiling the plot, but just imagine a small group of people flung into a full-scale zombie infestation. No one really knows what is going on, they all just want to stay alive for a few minutes longer than the next guy.
If you are a person who enjoys comic books, but can't stand waiting for weekly or monthly issues that resolve an ongoing storyline Raise the Dead is definitely for you.
Zombie Highway
Surfing the Internet I found a review for Zombie Highway that described a zombie story scenario that was unlike anything I'd ever encountered. Instead of the typical story of a group of survivors (or one survivor) looking for food, family, or safety; this group is trying to deliver a package. That's right. A package.
It gets better.
While trying deliver this package, and dodge the hordes of zombies, there are a few still breathing people out to get them. So... If you are looking for a comic book that mixes horror with humor give Zombie Highway a chance.

This is way too much! Great hub... It brings back so many memories of my childhood, when I was in to this stuff.
